We are excited to share insights from the recent OGV Group Live - 'Skills and Training' webinar, where our Head of Operations, Craig Smith, participated as a guest speaker. This webinar focused on the importance of effective learning and development (L&D) within the energy industry. Below, we highlight the main points Craig discussed during the session.
The Importance of Proper Diagnosis in L&D
In the webinar, Craig shared that successful L&D initiatives are started through understanding the real needs and issues within an organisation. He highlighted, “Introducing a new campaign requires a proper diagnosis and understanding of the underlying issue. Without this, companies might waste time and money on ineffective training.” Craig stressed the importance of partnering with clients and taking time to diagnose issues accurately before implementing any training solutions.
Aftercare and Implementation
Another critical point Craig made was about the importance of aftercare in L&D. He explained that it's not enough to deliver excellent training; real value comes from how well these new skills and behaviours are integrated into the workplace. “It's important to create an environment where new skills can be properly implemented. Otherwise, it can be a wasted effort.” Craig also pointed out that organisations must be set up to support the changes training aims to bring about.
Real-World Consequences of Inadequate Training
To underscore the importance of proper L&D, it's essential to recognise the severe consequences of inadequate training. Here are a couple of notable incidents where insufficient training had tragic outcomes:
- Hearing Loss in the Armed Forces: Recently, the RAF faced significant compensation claims due to inadequate training and equipment use, resulting in hearing loss for personnel. The Ministry of Defence has had to address these claims, highlighting the cost and impact of insufficient training on both individuals and organisations.

- Construction Worker’s Death: In a separate incident, a construction worker’s death was linked to improper safety training. The lack of appropriate L&D in handling site-specific hazards led to a fatal accident, underscoring the critical need for effective training programs to prevent such tragedies.

COMET’s Unique Approach
Craig shared that COMET’s approach to L&D is distinct because it involves a comprehensive diagnostic phase and a strong focus on effective aftercare. He said, “We diagnose, design, and deliver custom learning programmes that move people development from a one-off ‘event’ to a planned, ongoing, and sustainable process.” This approach ensures that training is relevant and tailored to the specific needs of the organisation while also being sustainable in the long run.
Craig's participation in the OGV Group Live - 'Skills and Training' webinar highlighted the key elements of successful learning and development (L&D) initiatives. From pinpointing the issue to effective implementation and aftercare, his insights show how committed COMET is to providing impactful and lasting training solutions.
