At COMET, we are proud to announce a new initiative in collaboration with Port Skills and Safety (PSS) to enhance safety performance and data intelligence within the UK’s port industry. This partnership brings together COMET’s software and expertise with PSS’s extensive industry knowledge and membership network to tackle the unique challenges faced by port operators and their supply chains.
Supporting Safer Ports with Data-Driven Solutions
As part of this initiative, PSS members will gain free access to COMET’s Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis platform, a powerful tool designed to manage incidents ranging from minor slips and trips to more significant non-conformances. The platform enables ports to adopt a rigorous yet proportionate approach to incident management, ensuring operational efficiency while prioritising safety.
In addition to the software, PSS members can also benefit from HSE Culture Assessments and Behavioural Training Programmes. These offerings are designed to drive meaningful and lasting improvements across port operations, creating a safer and more effective working environment.
A Shared Mission to Improve Industry Safety
PSS, the UK’s professional safety and skills membership organisation, represents over 120 ports, services, and training providers. Its mission to make the port sector one of the safest industries aligns seamlessly with COMET’s focus on enabling organisations to improve safety through technology and data.
Debbie Cavaldoro, CEO of PSS, highlighted the impact of this collaboration:
“This collaboration with COMET isn’t just about supporting individual ports—it’s about improving the entire industry. By working together and sharing data and insights, we will create a powerful ecosystem of safety and operational excellence. We exist to make ports safer and want the port sector to become one of the safest places to work; this project supports that mission.”
Harnessing the Power of Data
One of the key benefits of this initiative is the ability to transform data into actionable insights. COMET’s CEO, Mark Rushton, emphasised the importance of this approach:
“At the heart of this initiative is the opportunity to leverage the volume, quality, and usefulness of the data and insights generated from deploying these solutions. Every product and service in this suite is designed to improve skills, standards, or safety. Importantly, each element creates data that can be transformed into actionable insights, adding significant value to PSS members and help drive the port industry forward.”
Building on Previous Successes
This new initiative builds on the success of a previous collaboration between PSS and COMET, which explored the potential of AI in root cause analysis for port operations. A pilot project analysed data from multiple port groups, including first responder reports, investigations, and safety observations, to identify common root causes across the sector. The project highlighted the importance of retaining high-quality data to fully unlock the potential of AI and data analysis.
PSS is now encouraging more ports to participate in data collection efforts, focusing on observations, near misses, and incidents to maximise the benefits of computer learning and AI-driven insights.
