At COMET, we know that improving safety and performance also means thinking seriously about sustainability. That’s why we’re proud to share that members of our team have successfully completed the ‘Pathways to Net Zero’ course, a practical and recognised training programme that supports organisations in developing and implementing their own Net Zero plans.

This practical course gave us the knowledge and tools to understand our carbon footprint and take meaningful steps towards Net Zero. It also gave us the confidence to start building a clear, structured plan to reduce our emissions across all areas of the business.

What we covered

The course helped us:

  • Define our carbon boundaries
  • Understand Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Build a baseline and action plan
  • Set science-based targets
  • Learn the importance of tracking progress and reviewing regularly
  • Communicate our Net Zero approach clearly

Why it matters

Taking part in this training is part of COMET’s wider commitment to reducing our environmental impact. We believe that data and insight don’t just help reduce risk, they can also help reduce emissions, especially when businesses have the right tools to track, analyse and improve performance across the board.

A key milestone: Emissions calculated and Net Zero plan in place

‘The most important outcome from this training is that we can now calculate our carbon emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3. It’s given us a clear starting point to take action that makes a difference.

As a result, we’ve developed a Net Zero plan for the business, setting out the steps we’ll take to reduce our emissions in line with recognised guidance and targets.’ –
Dr. Douglas Leith, CIO COMET

What’s next?

Completing this course is just one step in our sustainability journey. We’re now building on what we’ve learned by:

  • Reviewing our carbon footprint in line with the GHG Protocol
  • Exploring where digital tools can support smarter data gathering and analysis
  • Embedding emissions reduction into our wider business strategy

Our thanks to Scottish Enterprise and IEMA

A big thank you to Scottish Enterprise for delivering such a valuable course and supporting us throughout the process. Thanks also to IEMA for accrediting the training and setting the final assessment. Their help will be instrumental as we move forward with our action plans and continue to reduce our impact.
