We’re proud to share that COMET’s Head of Investigations, Alan Smith, features in the upcoming second series of Donal MacIntyre’s UKKiller Evidence, which will air on ITVX and Amazon Prime on May 26 at 10pm.

Alan appears in Episode 7, which revisits the murder of Kemnay father Dean Jamieson. At the time of the investigation, Alan was Detective Superintendent with Grampian Police. He led the investigation that resulted in the conviction of the three men responsible. The episode takes a closer look at how the case unfolded and the investigative and forensic effort that led to justice for Dean’s family.

The case has had a lasting impact on everyone involved. Like many of the cases Alan worked on during his time in policing, it highlights the time and commitment needed to uncover the truth and the lasting impact these events have on those left behind. It’s a stark reminder of the human stories at the centre of major investigations and the responsibility that comes withleading them.

Whilst Alan is the talking head in the programme, he is keen to emphasise that the successful outcome was the result of joint effort from a team with diverse experience which he was privileged to lead.

Alan’s background includes decades of work across major and organised crime. His time in policing saw him lead inquiries into homicide, kidnapping, corporate crime and a number of offshore fatalities in the North Sea.

Over the years, Alan has been asked to contribute to a number of crime documentaries, helping to explain the realities behind complex investigations. His appearance in this series reflects his depth of experience and the values that continue to guide his work.

We know that revisiting cases like this is extremely difficult for the families involved. The programme does not aim to dramatise events, but to give a clearer understanding of the investigation process and the effort involved in reaching a resolution.
